Profit beat the median analyst forecast of $30.66 billion compiled by the company itself. The growth came mainly from refining, not from crude: that business's earnings before interest and taxes jumped 234% to $10.3 billion on stronger refining margins. It is a sign that petrol and diesel are expensive right now compared with crude oil.

The main numbers. Adjusted net income $31.2 billion (a year ago $28.6 billion). Cash flow from operations $38.7 billion (was $36.1 billion). Free cash flow, the cash left after spending on projects, $28.2 billion (was $23.6 billion). The gearing ratio, a measure of debt, fell to 5.5% on September 30 from 6.2% on June 30.
Where the growth came from. Downstream means turning crude into petrol, diesel and chemicals. Adjusted earnings before interest and taxes in that business rose 234% in a year to $10.3 billion. The company puts it down to stronger refining margins, the gap between the price of fuel and the price of crude.
The dividend. The base dividend for the third quarter is $21.9 billion, 3.5% more than a year ago. It will be paid in the fourth quarter. The Saudi state owns most of Aramco's shares, so the dividend also matters for the country's budget.
What the company says about the market. In the release, CEO Amin Nasser writes that geopolitical uncertainty and attacks on key energy facilities amplified the global energy supply crisis in the third quarter. He says the company kept delivering to customers. The East-West Pipeline gave export flexibility, and Aramco is exploring more overseas storage and alternative export routes.
Projects. Production started at the Zuluf crude increment. Jafurah phase two, the Fadhili Gas Plant expansion and the Dammam development are on track. Aramco bought a 49% stake in Saudi AI company HUMAIN, contributing assets and about $2.6 billion in cash. It also signed a shareholders' agreement for a mineral exploration and hard-rock mining joint venture.
How to read it. Adjusted net income is the company's figure without one-off items. The $30.66 billion forecast was compiled by Aramco itself, and other data providers may show a different consensus. We give no buy or sell advice.
