This survey shows how easy it is to borrow in the world's biggest economy. When credit is harder to get, companies and households spend less. The Fed had the survey in hand when it left rates unchanged on October 27-28.

Watch whether other data confirm it. Banks gave two reasons: less investment in equipment and borrowers moving to cheaper funding elsewhere. Credit card demand rose, which is worth comparing with household debt data. This is an overview, not advice.

What SLOOS is. It is a Fed survey where bank loan officers report how they changed lending standards and how demand moved. The October survey roughly covers the third quarter of 2026.
Businesses. Standards for loans to large and mid-sized firms were basically unchanged, but tighter for small firms. Demand weakened at firms of all sizes. Banks cited lower customer investment in plant and equipment, and borrowers shifting to other banks or nonbank lenders with better terms. Banks that tightened most often cited a less favorable or more uncertain economic outlook and problems in specific industries.
A puzzle. Reuters notes that government data showed business spending on equipment rose at a 20.9% annualized rate last quarter. So companies may still be investing but borrowing elsewhere. Oxford Economics called it encouraging that banks stopped tightening for large firms.
Commercial property and mortgages. Standards tightened for all commercial real estate loan types and demand fell. Mortgage standards were mostly unchanged, eased for jumbo loans and tightened for subprime. Mortgage demand weakened in every category.
Credit cards and cars. Credit card demand rose the most in four years, per Reuters. Banks most often said customers need more money because of price changes. At the same time, banks cut card limits and turn down more borrowers below credit score thresholds. Auto loan demand weakened and the minimum credit score for them went up.
Nonbank lenders. Banks tightened standards on loans to nondepository financial firms, including private equity funds. For the latest macro data, see https://freekonomist.com/en/macro/ . This is an overview, not advice.
