The BSP Monetary Board raised its target reverse repurchase rate by 50 basis points (0.5 points) to 5.5% on 22 October. The overnight deposit rate is now 5% and the lending rate 6%. It is the fourth hike in a row. All 27 economists polled by Reuters expected 0.25 points.

The bank is fighting rising prices. Its forecast for average inflation in 2027 rose to 6.0% from 5.4%. Costlier credit and higher deposit rates reach people and firms over time. Anyone on a fixed income feels it most: prices rise, income does not.

The next meeting is on 17 December. Governor Eli Remolona said the bank is open to more hikes, while OCBC expects a pause. Watch core inflation and the peso. This is not advice.
What was decided. The BSP Monetary Board raised its target reverse repurchase rate by 50 basis points to 5.50%. The overnight deposit and lending rates were set at 5.00% and 6.00%. Reuters calls it the fourth straight hike and notes it beat expectations: all 27 economists polled had pencilled in 0.25 points.
Why so big. The statement says inflation is seen to accelerate further in the coming months. Core inflation, which strips out the most volatile prices, is also projected to rise, a sign of underlying pressure. The bank points to higher global oil prices from renewed tensions in the Middle East, a recent rise in transport fares, and El Niño risks to crops. Reuters adds that the peso has been near a record low, and a weak currency pushes prices up in a country that relies heavily on fuel imports.
The forecasts. The bank kept its average inflation forecast for 2026 at 6.1%. For 2027 it raised the forecast to 6.0% from 5.4%. It sees inflation back near its 3.0% target only in 2028, easing to 3.3% in the figure Reuters cites. The Monetary Board expects the economy to recover, supported by fiscal measures.
What next. Governor Eli Remolona said: "We remain open to further interest rate hikes." Lavanya Venkateswaran, an economist at OCBC Bank, expects the bank to hold on 17 December, but says further hikes stay possible if core inflation stays elevated.
Who is affected. Banks may pass higher costs into deposit rates and new loan rates, but not at once (SunStar). SunStar columnist Nini Cabaero writes that retirees on fixed incomes are hit hardest and suggests checking whether their loans have fixed rates. We do not know how fast or how far banks will change their own rates.
