Solana switches on Alpenglow: transactions become final in a blink

On 21 October the Solana network moved to its new Alpenglow consensus, which aims to make a transaction irreversible in about 150 milliseconds.

What happened

On 21 October at about 14:00 UTC, Solana validators retired the old TowerBFT consensus and moved to Alpenglow, built by the Anza team. Anza says transactions now become irreversible in about 150 milliseconds, down from about 12.8 seconds.

Why it matters to you

Finality is the moment a transfer can no longer be undone. Exchanges, banks and shops wait for it before they credit your money. If the target holds, deposits and payments in SOL and Solana tokens will clear much faster. Users don't need to do anything.

What to check and watch

150ms is a target, not a promise: in the first hours the dashboard showed both 6.6 seconds and about 200ms. Watch how fast exchanges start crediting Solana deposits. The next steps, Rotor and quantum-resistant signatures, have no date yet.

What consensus is. It is the set of rules thousands of independent computers use to agree which block comes next and when it can no longer be undone. Since its launch in March 2020 Solana ran on a protocol called TowerBFT. Alpenglow has now replaced it.

How the switch went. Anza says the handoff happened at slot 459,653,000 at about 14:00 UTC, on the running network, without a stop. Before that the protocol went through public testing, red teaming, migration rehearsals and a security competition, then ran on testnet and devnet. Cointelegraph, citing the Solana Foundation dashboard, puts the switch at about 13:54 UTC.

What changes and what doesn't. Only the way validators vote on blocks changes. They now send votes straight to each other and combine them into a certificate. How transactions run, fees and programs stay the same. The Solana Foundation says users and most apps need no action.

What isn't here yet. 150ms is a target. When Cointelegraph published, the dashboard showed 6.6-second finality; later we saw about 202ms on it. The second part of the upgrade, Rotor, will speed up how blocks spread across the network, but it has no date. Neither does Quantumglow, a version with signatures built to resist quantum computers.

Confirmed facts

  • Alpenglow went live on Solana mainnet on 21 October 2026, replacing TowerBFT, which the network had run since its launch in March 2020.[1][3]
  • Anza says the switch happened at slot 459,653,000 at about 14:00 UTC.[1]
  • Anza says transactions now become irreversible in about 150 milliseconds instead of 12.8 seconds.[1][2]
  • Cointelegraph, citing the Solana Foundation dashboard, says the upgrade went live around 13:54 UTC and showed 6.6-second finality at press time.[3]
  • Transaction execution, fees and programs are unchanged, and users need to take no action.[2]
  • Rotor and Quantumglow are planned for later releases with no committed date.[1][2]
  • Anza researchers led by ETH Zurich professor Roger Wattenhofer published the Alpenglow design in May 2025.[1][3]

Implications

  • ConfirmedSolana now runs on the new consensus and TowerBFT is retired.
  • Our readingExchanges and payment apps could credit Solana transfers faster if real finality hits the target.
  • Our readingFast finality makes Solana more useful for payments and trading, where every second counts.

Still unknown

  • How steadily the network will hold about 150ms under heavy load.
  • When exchanges will cut the confirmations they require for SOL deposits.
  • When Rotor and Quantumglow will ship.

Who it affects

Global. Anyone who holds SOL or Solana tokens and moves them between wallets and exchanges
