Bank of Korea pauses at 3%, but openly talks about more hikes

South Korea's central bank held its rate at 3% after two hikes in a row, but said it is only deciding when and how much to raise next.

What happened

On 22 October the Bank of Korea unanimously kept its base rate at 3.00%. It raised it twice in a row this summer, in July and August. The bank now expects growth this year and next to be well above its August forecasts of 3.3% and 2.9%.

Why it matters to you

Korea is a key exporter of AI chips. When its central bank talks about more hikes, it signals that global inflation is not going away and cheap money is not coming back. That weighs on growth stocks and crypto and moves the won.

What to check and watch

The 26 November meeting, where analysts expect a hike. Korean inflation, 2.9% in September against a 2% target. And oil prices, which the bank names as a key risk.

Why pause. The bank says the economy is growing strongly, inflation is around 3% and financial stability risks remain. But uncertainty has grown over the Middle East conflict and policy in major economies, so the board wants to see how the two earlier hikes work.

What next. The statement says plainly that the board will decide the timing and pace of further increases. Inflation this year should be close to the August forecast of 2.7%, and next year above the earlier 2.3%. Governor Shin Hyun Song said the bank does not need to strictly follow the path markets expect and will watch the data.

Expectations. Reuters says all 34 analysts it polled expected a hold. The consensus sees the peak at 3.50%: one hike in November and another in the first quarter of 2027. Three-year bond futures barely moved.

What drives the economy. Exports and investment are growing on a strong chip sector. Reuters says exports for January to September topped $800 billion for the first time, helped by global AI spending. The bank also notes stocks fell sharply on worries about chipmaker profits, and home prices in and around Seoul are rising faster again.

Backdrop. Reuters puts the US Federal Reserve rate at 4.00% after a hike in September. Markets expect a hold in October and a final hike in December.
