What happened
From 19 to 21 October US spot bitcoin ETFs took in about $1.07bn net. Wednesday, 21 October, alone brought $524.8m. An ETF is a fund that trades on an exchange like a share and holds real bitcoin. Before Monday the funds were down about $615m for October. Now they are up about $460m.
Why it matters to you
ETFs are the main door for big money from traditional finance. When money comes in, the funds buy bitcoin on the market. Three days in a row is more than a one-off spike. But the price has not reacted: on Thursday bitcoin was around $81,500.
What to check and watch
Whether inflows hold through the end of the week. The Fed meeting on 27-28 October. And ether ETFs: on Wednesday they took in money for the first time in five days, but are still down about $1.07bn for October.
According to Farside Investors' table, US spot bitcoin ETFs took in $526.7m on Monday, 19 October, $23.2m on Tuesday and $524.8m on Wednesday. That is about $1.07bn over three trading days.
On Monday almost all of it came from one fund, BlackRock's IBIT. Wednesday was broader: IBIT took $235m, Fidelity's FBTC $212.7m, and Bitwise, ARK, Franklin and both Grayscale funds were positive too. That matters more than one big number: the money went into many funds.
For two weeks before that, money was leaving. Decrypt reports the funds lost about $910m over that stretch, and by Friday, 16 October, October was down about $615m. Now the month is up about $460m. Since launch, Farside counts about $58bn of net inflows.
The price is not following. Decrypt says bitcoin traded around $81,470 on Thursday, down 2.4% in 24 hours, after nearing $85,000 on Wednesday. Ether fell 2.6% to about $2,393.
ETF inflows do not guarantee a higher price. They are one measure of demand and can turn into outflows the next day. Thursday's data, for 22 October, comes after the US market close.
