What happened

On 26 October the NBA announced three things. It signed a memorandum of understanding with the CFTC, the US derivatives regulator, to share information on prediction markets. Kalshi and Polymarket became its preferred exchanges. Its deal with DraftKings now also covers prediction markets.

Why it matters to you

Prediction markets let people buy contracts on the outcome of an event, like a game. The CFTC treats them as a financial market, while several states call them gambling. Backing from a major league strengthens the CFTC and the platforms. The big risk is insider trading, and these deals are meant to catch it.

What to check and watch

Watch the US Supreme Court fight: the NFL sided with the states against Kalshi. See which other NBA partners join prediction markets in the coming weeks. This is not advice to trade these contracts.

What happened. The NBA announced a set of agreements on prediction markets tied to its games. The memorandum with the CFTC was signed by CFTC Chairman Michael Selig and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. The two sides will share information and talk regularly about game integrity.

Kalshi and Polymarket. Both became the NBA's preferred prediction market exchanges. They get rights to use league branding in the US and official game data from Sportradar to settle contracts. In return the deals limit which markets are allowed, ban league and team staff from trading NBA contracts and require sharing data on suspicious trades.

Who else. The NBA's deal with DraftKings now covers prediction markets. The league says it will expand ties with other betting partners in the coming weeks. The NBA is the third big North American league to sign a deal like this, after the NHL and MLB.

Why it is contested. The CFTC says contracts on game outcomes are financial instruments under its watch. Several states have sued, arguing they are bets that should follow state law. The NFL backed a request for the US Supreme Court to review the dispute and has not signed on with the CFTC.

Background. Reuters notes recent betting scandals, including lifetime bans and the arrest of more than 30 people last year in a federal probe into illegal gambling. NBA players may not promote markets on NBA games.
