Averaging down

Averaging down is buying more of an asset that has fallen since you bought it, to lower your average entry price. It enlarges a position that is already going against you.

How it works

You buy at one price, the price drops, and you buy more. Your average price goes down, so a smaller bounce gets you back to breakeven. That sounds sensible, but your position size grows, and so does your potential loss if the drop continues.

Averaging down is often confused with DCA. DCA means pre-planned purchases of a fixed amount on a schedule regardless of price, usually for long-term holding without leverage. Averaging down tends to happen on impulse, when a trader does not want to admit a mistake.

With leverage it is especially dangerous, because every add moves liquidation closer. Many accounts are wiped out exactly this way: not by one bad trade but by a series of adds into a falling market.

Example with numbers

You buy 1 token at $100. It drops to $80 and you buy 1 more. Your average is $90, so a move back to $90 gets you to zero. But if the price falls to $50, your loss is $80 instead of $50. You doubled down on an idea that was not working.

Common mistake

The main mistake is averaging into a trade that had a stop-loss instead of closing it as planned. A short-term trade turns into a long-term investment and risk gets out of control. If you want to accumulate an asset at different prices, plan a DCA in advance with an amount, a schedule and a limit. In trading, respect your stop.

Questions and answers

What is averaging down in simple terms?

It is buying more of an asset after it falls so that your average purchase price is lower. The position gets bigger, and so does the risk.

Is averaging down the same as DCA?

No. DCA is pre-planned regular buying of a fixed amount. Averaging down is usually an unplanned reaction to a drop, often breaking a stop-loss.

Can you average down with leverage?

Technically yes, but it is very risky: each add brings liquidation closer. Beginners should avoid it.
