Crypto exchange
A crypto exchange is a platform where you buy, sell and swap cryptocurrency for money or other coins. It matches buyers with sellers and charges a fee for it.
How it works
Most of the time "exchange" means a centralized one (CEX): a company opens an account for you, checks your identity (KYC), holds your money and coins, and runs an order book. You fund the account by card, bank transfer or crypto and trade through an app or website.
There are also decentralized exchanges (DEX), where swaps run through smart contracts straight from your wallet. Big exchanges also offer futures, P2P, staking and more, but the core job is the same: swapping at market prices.
An exchange is convenient, but while coins sit there, the exchange is effectively in control of them. Exchanges have been hacked, gone bankrupt and frozen withdrawals. So people choose platforms licensed in their country, publishing proof of reserves, with strong account security.
You deposit $200 and buy ETH at $2,500. With a 0.1% fee you get about 0.0799 ETH. Then you withdraw it to your own wallet, paying the network withdrawal fee, so the coins no longer depend on the exchange.
A common mistake is picking an exchange because of ads and bonuses, or signing up through a link from a messenger. That is how people end up on a fake "exchange" that never lets money out. Check that the platform is well known and operates legally in your country, type the address yourself and bookmark it.
