FUD
FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) is negative news or rumours that spread panic in the market. Sometimes it points to real risks, sometimes it is deliberate manipulation.
How it works
The term comes from 1970s marketing, where it described scaring customers about the risks of switching to a competitor. In crypto, FUD is anything that spreads fear: rumours of a ban, an exchange hack, a project going bust, big holders selling.
FUD can be true or false. Real problems, a hack, frozen withdrawals, a regulator's lawsuit, also get called FUD, especially by holders who do not want to hear it. False FUD is spread to push the price down and buy cheaper. So the word alone says nothing about whether the news is true.
The market often reacts sharply to FUD: the price falls, people sell at a loss, and later it recovers, or it does not. The best defence is to check information at the source and to have a plan in advance.
A rumour spreads on social media that a major country will ban crypto. BTC falls 10% in an hour. The next day it turns out the story was about an old bill with no chance of passing, and the price recovers. Those who panic-sold lost about 10%.
There are two mistakes: selling on every negative rumour, or brushing off real problems as "just FUD". When an exchange freezes withdrawals or a project gets hacked, it is serious. Check news against official sources, separate facts from emotions and act on your plan.
