Trend
A trend is a sustained direction of price. In an uptrend each peak and trough is higher than the last; in a downtrend each is lower.
How it works
You see a trend in the structure: an uptrend is a series of higher highs and higher lows, a downtrend is lower highs and lower lows. If price moves between two levels without new extremes, it is a range (sideways market). Many traders also use a moving average: price above a rising EMA is a sign of an uptrend.
A trend depends on the timeframe. The 1-hour chart can be falling while the daily chart is rising, and that is not a contradiction: it is a pullback inside a bigger trend. So you define the trend on the higher timeframe first and look for entries on the lower one.
Trading with the trend is usually easier than against it: pullbacks to support in an uptrend give entries with a clear stop. A trend is considered broken when price breaks the last important low (in an uptrend) or high (in a downtrend).
Highs 100 → 110 → 120, lows 95 → 104 → 112. That is an uptrend. As long as price holds above 112, the structure is intact. A close below 112 is the first sign the trend may change.
BTC is rising on the daily chart, but on the hourly chart it dropped 4% in a day to a previous support zone. For a swing trader this is not a reversal but a possible pullback to buy, with a tight stop under the zone.
The main mistake is trying to catch the reversal: "it is too high already, time to short". A trend can run much longer than seems logical. Do not trade against the trend until the structure breaks. And do not confuse a pullback with a reversal: one red candle does not make a downtrend.
Questions and answers
What is a trend in simple terms?
It is the direction price moves in for a noticeable time: up, down or sideways. You define it by the peaks and troughs on the chart.
How do I identify a trend on a chart?
Look at the recent highs and lows: if both are rising, the trend is up; if both are falling, it is down. You can add a 50 or 200 EMA for confirmation.
What does "the trend is your friend" mean?
It is advice to trade in the direction of the main move rather than against it. This usually improves your odds, but there are no guarantees.
