Utility token

A utility token is a token that gives access to a service's features: paying for it, getting discounts, voting or staking. It gives no ownership in the company and no claim on its profits.

How it works

The idea of a utility token is a ticket or chip inside an ecosystem. You use it to pay fees in an app, unlock premium features, vote on protocol changes or stake it for rewards. If many people use the service, demand for the token may grow.

Utility tokens are contrasted with security tokens, which give share-like rights: ownership, dividends, buybacks. The distinction matters to regulators, but rules differ by country, and a project does not get to decide how its token is classified.

In practice the "utility" is often weak: the token is required only because the project said so, and the service could run without it. A good question is what makes people buy and hold this token, other than hoping the price goes up.

Example with numbers

A file-storage service charges in its own token: 1 GB per month costs 2 tokens. If users grow tenfold, they need ten times more tokens to pay. But if you can also pay in dollars and the token is just swapped along the way, real demand for it is close to zero.

Common mistake

A common mistake is assuming "utility" means value. Many tokens with flashy utility lost 90%+ because nobody used the service and the team kept selling. Look at real usage and at how many tokens have not yet reached the market.

Questions and answers

What is a utility token in simple terms?

It is a token used as a chip inside a service: to pay, get access or vote. It is not a share in the business.

What is the difference between a utility token and a security token?

A security token is like a share: it gives ownership, income or other financial rights. A utility token only gives access to a service's features.

Does a utility token go up if the project succeeds?

Not necessarily. If the token is optional or too many are issued, the service's success may never show up in the price.
