What happened

Farside data shows net outflows of $643.2 million from US spot bitcoin ETFs on October 30. BlackRock's IBIT lost the most ($233.7 million), followed by Fidelity's FBTC ($201 million). Decrypt says it was the first full trading session after the Binance hack and the biggest daily outflow of October.

Why it matters to you

ETFs are the main route for big money into bitcoin. One day erased the previous four days of inflows, about $441 million. The week ended about $202 million down. This is how large investors answered the hack.

What to check and watch

Watch Monday's and Tuesday's flows: another big outflow would show the selling is not a one-off. US midterm elections are on Tuesday and the jobs report is on Friday. This is an overview, not advice.

The numbers. Farside Investors publishes flows for every US spot bitcoin ETF. On October 30: IBIT minus $233.7 million, FBTC minus $201 million, ARKB minus $129.5 million, GBTC minus $53.3 million, BITB minus $25.7 million. Together that is $643.2 million. Before that came four days of inflows: $110.3 million, $176 million, $137.3 million and $17.2 million.

Why Friday. According to Decrypt, the attack on Binance began on Thursday at 4:05 p.m. New York time, after US markets had closed. So Thursday's $17.2 million inflow came before the theft, and Friday was the first day fund investors could react.

The month. Decrypt puts October's bitcoin ETF outflows at about $516 million. Since launch in January 2024 the funds still have $57.4bn of net inflows and $103.2bn in assets. One bad day is visible, but it is not a collapse of the whole inflow story.

Price and other funds. Bitcoin fell about 4% on Friday to roughly $76,400, with more than $1.3bn of leveraged positions liquidated. By Saturday it had steadied near $77,520. Ethereum ETFs lost $155.7 million on Friday, their fifth day of outflows in a row, about $431 million in total.

Who it touches. Anyone holding bitcoin or shares of bitcoin funds, and anyone who trades crypto on ETF flows. Outflows do not mean the price must fall further, but they show the mood of large buyers.
