Why it matters to you

China is the world's factory. Its factory profits show how demand for metals, oil and electronics is holding up. The numbers move the yuan, commodities and Asian stocks.

What to check and watch

Whether the speed-up holds in October. The gap between sectors: electronics and non-ferrous metals grow, while steel, building materials and cars fall. And China's trade tensions with Europe over its growing surplus.

What happened. On 27 October China's National Bureau of Statistics released profit data for industrial firms with annual revenue of at least 20 million yuan. Profits rose 14.4% from a year earlier in September. Per Reuters, growth was 4.2% in August. Over nine months profits reached 60,337.4 billion yuan (about 6.03 trillion), up 15.5%. For January to August, per Reuters, the gain was 15.7%.

Who is making money. Computer, communication and electronics makers led with profits up 103.8% over nine months. Non-ferrous metal smelting added 79.7%, coal mining 57.0%, chemicals 49.2%, oil and gas extraction 21.3%.

Who is losing. Steel (ferrous metal smelting) fell 73.3%, furniture 51.3%, building materials (non-metallic mineral products) 46.9%, cars 22.8%, and power and heat supply 17.9%.

The big picture. Industrial revenue rose 6.6% over nine months to 106.21 trillion yuan. The profit margin (profit per yuan of revenue) rose to 5.68%, up 0.44 percentage points from a year earlier. Ding Meng, chief China economist at CITIC Bank International, told Reuters that AI-related industries are a "key force supporting industrial profits".

Keep in mind. Growth is uneven: some sectors double their profits while others lose more than half. This is not a currency forecast or advice to buy or sell anything.

  • Our readingStrong electronics profits suggest global demand for AI hardware is holding up for now.
  • Our readingHigh non-ferrous metal prices lift Chinese smelters' profits but squeeze the firms that buy those metals.

Still unknown

  • Why September sped up so much: the bureau gives no reason.
  • Whether demand for AI hardware holds in the coming quarters.
