What happened
France's statistics office INSEE published its first estimate on 30 October: GDP fell 0.1% in the third quarter after zero growth in the second. Analysts polled by Reuters expected a 0.1% rise. Exports dropped 1.7% after rising 2.8%, largely because of aerospace.
Why it matters to you
France is the euro zone's second-biggest economy. People at home are spending more: household consumption rose 0.4%. But business investment keeps falling, and October inflation, per the flash estimate, rose to 3.4%. Weak growth plus high prices put the ECB in a tight spot.
What to check and watch
Eurostat's first estimate for euro area GDP, and full French inflation data on 13 November. The first GDP estimate can still be revised. This is an overview, not a forecast or financial advice.
What happened. On 30 October INSEE released its first estimate of the quarterly accounts. France's real GDP fell 0.1% in the third quarter of 2026. Growth in the second quarter was zero. Analysts polled by Reuters expected plus 0.1%.
What pulled it down. Foreign trade took 0.6 percentage points off growth, after adding 0.6 a quarter earlier. Exports fell 1.7% after rising 2.8%, while imports barely moved (plus 0.1%). Per Reuters, exports of transport equipment dropped 9.1%, with aerospace as the main drag. In the second quarter those exports had jumped 20.8%.
What held it up. Domestic demand excluding inventories added 0.1 points, the same as the quarter before. Household consumption picked up to plus 0.4% from plus 0.2%. Government consumption rose 0.3%. Inventories added 0.4 points. Investment (gross fixed capital formation) fell again, by 0.6% after minus 0.5%.
Prices and jobs. The same day INSEE gave its flash inflation estimate: consumer prices should be up 3.4% on the year in October, after 3.1% in September. Energy prices are rising for a fourth month in a row, led by gas and petroleum products. Private payroll jobs were almost flat in the third quarter: minus 0.1%, or about 25,800 jobs.
Why it matters to you. When an economy stalls while prices rise, a central bank has a harder choice between supporting growth and fighting inflation. That can move the euro and euro area bonds. That is our reading, not a forecast.
What we don't know. How the estimate changes once INSEE has more data. Whether the drop in aerospace exports is temporary. What the first estimate for the whole euro area shows.
