Inflation in Italy: why prices jumped to 5.4% in October

Inflation in Italy sped up to 5.4% a year in October from 4.2% in September, Istat says. Energy is the main driver, and the final figure is due on November 17.

What happened

On October 30 Istat, Italy's statistics office, said consumer prices in October were 5.4% higher than a year earlier, up from 4.2% in September. Prices rose 0.9% in one month. This is a preliminary estimate. Annual inflation is back at its August 2023 level.

Why it matters to you

Energy drove the jump: energy goods went from +22.6% to +31.4% a year. Everyday shop items sped up too, from 1.5% to 2.5%. When prices rise this fast, the same pay buys less.

What to check and watch

Watch Istat's final October figure on November 17 and the ECB meeting in December. Inflation without energy and fresh food is only 2.0%, so the jump is narrow so far. This is an overview, not advice.

What happened. On October 30 Istat published its preliminary estimate for October 2026. The national consumer price index (NIC), including tobacco, rose 0.9% on the month and 5.4% on the year. In September the yearly rate was 4.2%. Istat says inflation is back at the level of August 2023. The harmonised index (IPCA), used to compare euro area countries, rose 1.2% on the month and 5.6% on the year.

What pushes prices up. Mostly energy. The yearly rise in energy goods sped up from 22.6% to 31.4%. Regulated energy prices went from 25.8% to 59.5%, and non-regulated ones from 22.5% to 29.4%. On the month, regulated energy rose 18.8%. Unprocessed food went from 5.5% to 7.5%, and transport services from 1.6% to 3.1%. Goods overall sped up from 5.4% to 7.5%, services from 2.6% to 2.9%.

What you buy every week. Istat calls this the "carrello della spesa", the shopping basket: food, home care and personal care goods. Its yearly rise went from 1.5% to 2.5%. Items bought often rose 5.8% after 5.2%. Inflation without energy and fresh food rose from 1.6% to 2.0%. Acquired inflation for 2026, meaning the yearly average if prices stayed flat for the rest of the year, is 3.4%.

Why people search for it now. Euro area inflation reached 4% in October against 3.8% in September, the highest since September 2023, according to Altroconsumo. The ECB left rates unchanged at its last meeting, but several members signalled they are ready to act again. Markets price a 0.25 point rise in December. The US Fed kept its rate at 3.75-4% last week and put off a further rise to December, ANSA reports. Our view: the Istat data lands in a busy week of rate talk, which is likely why searches for "inflazione" are up.

Caveats. The data is preliminary, and Istat will publish the final figures on November 17. The headline 5.4% is far above inflation without energy and fresh food, at 2.0%. So the jump is concentrated in energy, not spread across all prices. Altroconsumo describes the euro area in a similar way. This is our view.
