What happened

Japan's labour ministry released preliminary September data. Average monthly pay rose 4.6% from a year earlier to 311,409 yen. Reuters says this is the fastest rise since January 1997. Real wages, meaning pay adjusted for price rises, grew 2.2%. That is the ninth monthly gain in a row.

Why it matters to you

The Bank of Japan wants to see pay growing faster than prices before it raises rates again. Data like this makes a hike more likely. Japanese rates move the yen, Japanese stocks and cheap yen loans that fund many trades on global markets.

What to check and watch

Watch the next Bank of Japan meeting: Reuters says many analysts expect a hike as soon as December. The September figures are preliminary, and final data comes later and can change.

The numbers. According to Japan's labour ministry, average monthly pay at firms with 5 or more staff was 311,409 yen in September 2026, up 4.6% from a year earlier. Base salary, meaning pay without overtime and bonuses, rose 3.7% to 279,182 yen. Hourly pay for part-time workers rose 5.4% to 1,463 yen and has now grown for 63 months in a row.

Real wages. To see whether buying power is growing, the ministry adjusts pay for price rises. Prices used for this rose 2.4% from a year earlier, and real pay grew 2.2%. That is the ninth monthly gain in a row. In August, after revision, real pay grew 1.6%.

A caveat. One-off payments, mostly bonuses, jumped 32.6%. Reuters reports that the ministry calls this jump a statistical quirk, not a real rise in bonuses. So the main signal here is base pay, which keeps growing by more than 3%.

Summer bonuses. Along with the September data, the ministry published summer bonus results: 448,765 yen per worker on average at firms that pay them, up 5.3% from a year earlier.

What comes next. The Bank of Japan has long said it needs steady wage growth above inflation. Reuters reports that many analysts expect the next rate hike as soon as December. This is a news summary, not advice.

  • Our readingThe data strengthens the case for a Bank of Japan rate hike, but the decision also depends on other figures. This is our view.
  • Our readingIf Japanese rates rise, the yen could strengthen and yen loans would cost more. This is our view, not a forecast.
