Mt. Gox delays repayments again: new deadline is 31 October 2027

What happened

On 16 October Mt. Gox trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said the deadline for repaying creditors moves from 31 October 2026 to 31 October 2027. The court allowed it. Mt. Gox is the Japanese exchange that collapsed in 2014.

Why it matters to you

Coins not yet handed out are potential selling. Per Arkham data cited by Decrypt, wallets linked to the exchange hold about 34,388 BTC, roughly $2.8B. In summer 2024 news of Mt. Gox payouts already weighed on the price.

What to check and watch

Watch transfers from Mt. Gox wallets: per Arkham, the last big one was in June 2026. If you are a creditor, check that everything is complete in the claims.mtgox.com system.

What the notice says. The main repayments are largely done for creditors who completed every step and had no issues. But many still have nothing: some have not finished the required procedures, others hit problems along the way. To pay them too, the trustee, with the court's permission, moved the deadline by a year, to 31 October 2027 Japan time.

This is the fourth delay. Per Decrypt, the deadline was first October 2023, then it moved to October 2024, 2025 and 2026.

How much is left. Decrypt, citing Arkham, puts about 34,388 BTC in wallets linked to Mt. Gox, around $2.8B. In June 2026, 10,422.65 BTC left cold storage, and per the same data nothing has moved since. In total the exchange owes about $9B in bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash to roughly 24,000 creditors, and about 19,500 of them have been paid.

Why markets care. When payouts were announced in July 2024, Mt. Gox held about 141,686 BTC and bitcoin fell 6.5% in a day. There are four times fewer coins now and the market is bigger. The delay itself says nothing about whether coins get sold: creditors decide that once they are paid.

Still unknown

  • When the trustee will start moving coins again.
  • How many creditors will sell bitcoin right after they get it.
  • The exact balance: 34,388 BTC is Arkham's estimate, not the trustee's figure.
