What happened

Shell reported third-quarter results on 29 October. Adjusted earnings were $10.81 billion, up from $9.84 billion a quarter earlier and $5.43 billion a year ago. Analysts in a company poll expected $10.33 billion, Reuters says. Shell announced a $5 billion share buyback for the next three months.

Why it matters to you

Refining was the main driver: the indicative refining margin jumped to a record $42 a barrel from $24 in Q2. High fuel prices bring oil majors cash, and buybacks support the shares.

What to check and watch

Watch how the shares react, where oil prices go and the roughly $6.4 billion non-cash loss Shell expects in Q4. Not advice to buy or sell.

What the company reported. Shell's adjusted earnings for the third quarter of 2026 were $10.814 billion, against $9.836 billion in the second quarter. Income attributable to shareholders was $12.1 billion. Reuters says analysts in a company-provided poll expected $10.33 billion on average, and a year earlier the figure was $5.43 billion.

Where the money came from. Chemicals and Products grew the most, earning $3.855 billion. The global indicative refining margin rose to $42 a barrel from $24 a quarter earlier, which Shell calls a record. Integrated Gas earned more on higher gas and LNG prices. Upstream earned less, on lower liquids prices and higher well write-offs.

Cash and debt. Cash flow from operations was $21.0 billion and free cash flow $16.3 billion. Net debt fell to $39.7 billion from $41.8 billion, and gearing is 16.6%. Shell closed the ARC Resources deal on 2 September and took the final investment decision on LNG Canada Phase 2. Its 2026 cash capex outlook, including ARC, is $23-25 billion.

The buyback. Shell announced a $5 billion buyback and expects to finish it by its Q4 results. A buyback cuts the number of shares in circulation, so each remaining share gets a bigger slice of profit.

What comes next. In Q4 Shell expects a non-cash loss from derecognising its Netherlands pension plan. The estimate as of 30 September is $6.4 billion and may still change. Non-cash means no money leaves the accounts, but reported profit falls. The next results and a capital markets update come on 4 February 2027.
