What happened
On November 3 Shopify reported results for the third quarter of 2026. Revenue was $3.74 billion, up 32% from a year ago, but just below the $3.75 billion analysts expected (Bloomberg data cited by Yahoo Finance). Gross merchandise volume (GMV), the total value of orders on the platform, was $119.15 billion against $120.08 billion expected. Shares fell about 15% in premarket trading that day.
Why it matters to you
The miss is small, and the business is growing fast: net income was $462 million versus $264 million a year ago, and free cash flow margin was 22%. Yahoo says it is Shopify's first revenue miss since 2022. A sharp drop on a small miss shows how high expectations were. That is our reading. SHOP trades on Nasdaq and the TSX, so investors in many countries follow it.
What to check and watch
For the fourth quarter Shopify guides to revenue growth in the low thirties percent and gross profit growth in the high twenties. Watch whether GMV growth holds up near that pace. This is an overview, not advice.

What the report showed. Revenue was $3.742 billion against $2.844 billion a year earlier, up 32%. Subscription Solutions brought in $836 million, up 20%. Merchant Solutions brought in $2.906 billion, up 35%. Gross profit was $1.781 billion, up 28%. Operating income was $568 million versus $343 million.
Where the miss was. According to Bloomberg data cited by Yahoo Finance, analysts expected revenue of $3.75 billion, so the gap is under 1%. Subscription revenue also came in lower: $836 million against $850.2 million expected. GMV, the total value of orders placed in Shopify stores, was $119.15 billion against $120.08 billion expected. In the company's own report, GMV rose 29% (30% in constant currency). Adjusted earnings per share of $0.49 beat the $0.48 estimate.
The profit side. GAAP net income was $462 million, up from $264 million a year ago. Free cash flow was $816 million versus $507 million, and its margin was 22% versus 18%. CTV News, citing The Canadian Press, leads with the net income figure.
The market reaction. Yahoo Finance reports that shares fell about 15% in premarket trading on Tuesday, November 3. Our sources do not give the close of that trading day, so we do not state it.
What comes next. For the fourth quarter the company expects revenue growth in the low thirties percent and gross profit growth in the high twenties. It expects operating expenses of 29% to 30% of revenue and a free cash flow margin in line with the fourth quarter of 2025.
Why it matters to you. Shopify is a platform for online stores, so its GMV is often read as a sign of how online retail is doing. Here it grew close to 30%, but the market wanted a little more. One quarter is not a trend. This is an overview, not advice.
