What happened
On 27 October the Bank of Korea said real GDP grew 1.0% in July to September from the previous quarter. The bank itself expected 0.3%, and analysts expected 0.7%, per Investing.com. Growth was 0.6% in Q2. Equipment investment rose 4.1% and exports 2.3%.
Why it matters to you
Korea is home to Samsung and SK Hynix, the top makers of memory for AI servers. Its GDP quickly shows how strong global demand for AI chips is. That matters for chip stocks and the won.
What to check and watch
How the won and the KOSPI index react. And what the Bank of Korea does with rates: last week it held at 3.00% and openly talked about more hikes.
What happened. According to preliminary Bank of Korea data reported by The Korea Times, South Korea's real GDP grew 1.0% in Q3 2026 from Q2. The Bank of Korea's own forecast was 0.3%. Per Investing.com, analysts expected 0.7%.
What drove it. Equipment investment rose 4.1%, mostly machinery for making semiconductors. Investment in intellectual property (research and software) rose 2.3%. Exports grew 2.3%, mainly chips, machinery and electrical equipment. Imports rose 2.4%, mostly crude oil and chipmaking equipment.
How the year went. The economy shrank 0.1% in Q4 2025, grew 1.8% in Q1 2026 and 0.6% in Q2. Now it is up 1.0%. The Korea Times says this puts the Bank of Korea's 3.3% full-year forecast, released in August, on firmer footing.
The other side. Investing.com notes that growth rests on chip exports, while domestic demand such as real estate and consumer spending lags behind. The economy depends more and more on one sector.
