Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq rebound after AI sell-off

Stock market today: the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq are higher on November 2, as of 10:47 AM ET, after Friday's AI-led sell-off, with oil lower.

What happened

As of 10:47 AM ET on November 2, Yahoo Finance reports the Dow up 1.1%, the S&P 500 up 1% and the Nasdaq Composite up 1.3%. On Friday the three fell 1.09%, 1.82% and 2.86%. Oil dropped on reports of US-Iran diplomacy, and some tech stocks bounced back. The day is not over.

Why it matters to you

The S&P 500 is tracked by the SPY fund, and the Dow and Nasdaq feed most index funds and pensions. Friday's drop was an AI-led tech sell-off. Today shows how fast the mood can swing. One green morning does not say the worry is gone: Oracle fell about 5% on its new $20 billion raise.

What to check and watch

Apple reports after the close today. Midterm elections are on Tuesday, November 3. The October jobs report is due Friday at 8:30 AM ET. Numbers will keep moving until the 4 PM ET close. This is an overview, not advice.

What happened. US stocks climbed on Monday, November 2, after a rough Friday. As of 10:47 AM ET, Yahoo Finance reports the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.1%, the S&P 500 up 1% and the Nasdaq Composite up 1.3%. Yahoo's quote box showed the Dow at 52,274.73, up 504.42 points or 0.97%, as of 11:19 AM ET. At the open, CNBC (as relayed by Stock Titan) had the Dow up 1%, the S&P 500 up 0.6% and the Nasdaq up 0.8% at 9:58 AM ET. These are live numbers and will change.

Friday for comparison. On Friday, October 30, the Dow closed down 1.09% at 51,770.31, the S&P 500 down 1.82% at 7,580.07 and the Nasdaq Composite down 2.86% at 25,437.00, according to Benzinga. Stock Titan notes it was the Nasdaq's worst day since June. Yahoo says the Nasdaq lost 5.2% over October. The SPY fund, which tracks the S&P 500, closed Friday at $755.72 per Stock Titan.

Why it moved. Yahoo says investors regained risk appetite. Crude oil fell on reports that the US and Iran are seeking a diplomatic resolution, with Brent near $105 a barrel. Stock Titan, citing CNBC, says Brent was down more than 6% at 9:58 AM ET. Some of the AI and chip names that fell last week bounced: CNBC reported Nvidia up nearly 2%, Amazon up more than 4% and Alphabet up more than 2%. Yahoo also notes that US manufacturing grew in October, with the ISM index at 55.5 against an expected 54.6.

What is still shaky. Yahoo says concerns about AI spending continue to churn beneath the surface. Oracle fell about 5% after announcing a $20 billion capital raise. Stock Titan also shows Marvell down 6.39% at 10:01 AM ET after agreeing to buy Lumentum. Last week's sell-off followed earnings from Alphabet and Amazon that investors did not like, as Yahoo describes it.

What to watch. Apple reports after the close today, and Palantir too. The US midterm elections are on Tuesday, November 3. The October jobs report comes out Friday at 8:30 AM ET. Each can move prices.

What is not known. Where the indexes will close today. Whether the bounce lasts. How the elections, Apple's report and the jobs data will land. This is an overview, not advice.
