Swiss prices rose 0.2% in October and 1.5% over the year, almost all of it from heating oil, petrol and diesel.

What happened

On November 3 Switzerland's statistics office, the FSO, said prices rose 0.2% in October and 1.5% over the year. September's annual rate was 1.0%. Economists expected 1.3% for the year and no change in the month, Investing.com reports.

Why it matters to you

Fuel did almost all the work. Petroleum products rose 6.4% in the month and 40.3% over the year. Without them prices were flat in the month and up only 0.6% over the year. Core inflation is 0.5%. So prices overall are calm, and the jump comes from oil.

What to check and watch

Watch oil prices: almost everything hangs on them right now. The FSO publishes November data on December 2. Eurostat's figures for other European countries come on November 18. This is an overview, not advice.

What was reported. Switzerland's Federal Statistical Office (FSO, BFS in German) published October consumer prices on November 3 at 8:30 local time. The index rose 0.2% from September to 101.7 points (December 2025 = 100). That is 1.5% above October 2025.

Above forecasts. Economists expected 1.3% for the year and no change for the month, according to Investing.com. September's annual rate was 1.0%. The gap is small, but it is a clear jump for a country where prices usually rise slowly.

What moved. Heating oil led (up 9.8% in the month, up 81.4% over the year), then petrol (up 4.9% and 26.5%) and diesel (up 6.0% and 36.9%). Petroleum products added 0.174 points of the total 0.206 rise. Clothing and shoes also rose 3.7% in the month.

What got cheaper. Doctors in private practice fell 3.0% in the month, hotels 2.9% and package trips abroad 2.5%. Rents were flat in the month and up 1.6% over the year.

Inflation without fuel. Take out petroleum products and prices were flat in the month and up 0.6% over the year. Core inflation (without fresh and seasonal products, energy and fuel) was 0.0% in the month and 0.5% over the year. Imported goods rose 1.2% in the month and 3.7% over the year, while domestic goods fell 0.1% in the month.

The European measure. The harmonised index (HICP), used to compare Switzerland with Europe, rose 0.4% in the month and 1.6% over the year. Eurostat publishes the other European countries on November 18.

How to read it. Swiss inflation right now is almost all about oil. If oil gets cheaper, the headline number can fall back fast. If it stays expensive, fuel keeps pulling the index up. That is our view, not a forecast.
