What happened
On 21 October Tesla reported its third quarter. Revenue was $28.05 billion, the same as a year ago. Adjusted earnings per share were $0.48, above what analysts expected. Net profit fell 43% to $787 million. Operating margin was 2.6%, down from 5.8% a year ago.
Why it matters to you
Tesla is selling cars at about the same pace, but spending far more. Research costs rose 69% and investment in factories and equipment doubled. The company says a shortage of batteries is holding car sales back. If you own Tesla or Nasdaq funds, this touches you too.
What to check and watch
What Musk says on the investor call about robotaxis, Optimus and batteries. Whether Tesla can really spend more than $25 billion this year as promised: about $13 billion has gone out in nine months. And any news on a possible merger with SpaceX.
Where Tesla makes money. Cars brought in $20.56 billion, 3% less than a year ago: fewer cars sold, lower average prices and almost no income left from selling regulatory credits. Energy, meaning home and grid batteries, fell 16% to $2.88 billion, partly because of tariff-related refunds to customers. Services, charging, insurance and parts grew 33% to $4.61 billion.
Where the money goes. Operating expenses rose 39% to $4.78 billion. Research and development cost $2.76 billion. Capital spending was $4.73 billion, up from $2.25 billion a year ago. Free cash flow turned positive again at $1.53 billion after a negative second quarter. Tesla holds $45.4 billion in cash and investments.
Why sales are stuck. Tesla says battery supply is still the main limit on how many cars it can build. It delivered 486,532 cars in the quarter, 2% fewer than a year ago. Active FSD driver-assist subscriptions reached 1.74 million, up 67%. Its Austin robotaxis have driven nearly 2 million miles with no one behind the wheel, and Cybercabs joined the fleet on 3 September.
Bitcoin and SpaceX. Profit includes paper moves: Tesla's bitcoin gained $288 million in value, while its SpaceX stake lost $142 million. A day before the report, Musk said on SpaceX's call that merging the two companies would be a good idea, and both boards have set up special committees. Nothing is decided.
