What happened
Japan's Statistics Bureau on 30 October published preliminary October 2026 prices for Tokyo's 23 wards. The headline index rose 2.8% in a year (2.7% in September). Excluding fresh food it rose 2.6% (was 2.7%). Excluding fresh food and energy it also rose 2.6% (was 2.9%).
Why it matters to you
Tokyo comes out before the whole country, so its numbers are read as an early hint for Japan's inflation. The Bank of Japan wants inflation around 2%, and it is above that. Per Investing.com, the bank ends its meeting today; markets expect the rate to stay at 1.25%, with talk of a December hike still alive. That matters for the yen.

What happened. On 30 October at 8:30am Tokyo time, Japan's Statistics Bureau released the preliminary Consumer Price Index for Tokyo's 23 wards for October 2026. It is an early snapshot: prices are collected mid-month, and the nationwide data come later.
The three key numbers. The headline index rose 2.8% in a year, against 2.7% in September. Excluding fresh food, the Bank of Japan's main gauge, it rose 2.6% against 2.7%. Excluding fresh food and energy it rose 2.6% against 2.9%. Per Investing.com, the core figure matched market expectations.
What lifted the headline. Fresh food: up 8.6% in a year, from 1.7% in September. Fresh vegetables rose 10.5%, and lettuce more than doubled (up 118.3%). Food overall rose 3.8%, eating out 4.6%. Rent rose 1.9%.
What held it down. Electricity, gas and water rose 2.2% in a year, against 3.8% in September. Rice other than the Koshihikari variety fell 31.3%. Nursery school fees dropped to zero in the data, taking 0.21 points off the headline.
Why markets care. The Bank of Japan raised its rate to 1.25% in September. Per Investing.com, a hold is expected today, with a door left open to more hikes. If prices in Japan stay above 2%, the bank has more reason to raise rates, which moves the yen and trades funded by borrowing in yen.
What we don't know. What the Bank of Japan decides today and what it signals for December. Whether the jump in fresh food prices lasts: such swings often depend on the weather. This is an overview of the data, not a forecast or advice.
