What happened

On November 2 the US Treasury said it expects to borrow $618 billion from markets in October to December 2026. In August it expected $628 billion. The cut came only because the quarter started with more cash in the account. Without that, borrowing needs are $24 billion higher than in August. For January to March 2027 Treasury expects $800 billion.

Why it matters to you

The more the government borrows, the more bonds markets have to buy. That pushes on yields, and through them on mortgages, the dollar, stocks and crypto. $800 billion in one quarter is a lot.

What to check and watch

The key part comes Wednesday, November 4, at 8:30 a.m. New York time (13:30 UTC), when Treasury sets auction sizes. Watch 10-year and 30-year yields. This is an overview, not advice.

What happened. Once a quarter the US Treasury says how much it will borrow from private investors. On November 2 it estimated $618 billion for October to December 2026, assuming $850 billion in cash at the end of December. That is $10 billion less than in August. For January to March 2027 the estimate is $800 billion, assuming $1 trillion in cash at the end of March.

Why lower is not better. The quarter started with $984 billion in cash instead of the expected $950 billion. That cushion lowered the estimate. Without it, borrowing needs are $24 billion higher than Treasury expected in August, because projected cash flows got worse.

What happened last quarter. In July to September Treasury borrowed $742 billion against an August estimate of $739 billion.

Why it matters to you. New US debt is bought by banks, funds and foreign investors. If bond supply grows faster than demand, yields go up. Yields drive loan and mortgage rates, the dollar and how stocks and crypto are valued.

What comes next. On Wednesday, November 4, Treasury will give its quarterly refunding details. Per Reuters, traders want to see if auction sizes change. Analysts think that if Treasury trims long-dated sales, the 20-year and 30-year auctions would go first, with more borrowing in 2-year to 7-year notes. These are analyst views, not a decision.
