What happened
On 29 October Volkswagen reported a third-quarter operating loss of €5.86 billion. A year ago the loss was €1.3 billion. Revenue fell 6.3% to €75.3 billion and deliveries to customers fell 14.3% to 1.885 million vehicles. Shares were indicated about 1.1% lower before the open, Reuters says.
Why it matters to you
Special items of €7.8 billion drove most of it, including a non-cash €6.4 billion writedown of Porsche goodwill. Even without them, the nine-month margin is only 3.8%. That keeps pressure on costs and jobs.
What to check and watch

What the group reported. Volkswagen published results for the first nine months of 2026. The operating result for the third quarter was a loss of €5.86 billion, against a loss of €1.3 billion a year earlier. The loss after tax grew from €1.07 billion to €5.82 billion. Reuters says analysts had expected a loss of €2.6 billion.
Where the loss comes from. Special items were €7.8 billion in the third quarter and €8.7 billion over nine months. They include a non-cash writedown of Porsche goodwill of €6.4 billion, an impairment of assets of companies in China of about €1 billion, and costs tied to the planned sale of the Osnabrück plant. Goodwill is the part of a purchase price paid above the value of a company's assets. Writing it down does not take cash out of the bank, but it cuts profit on paper.
How the business is doing. Third-quarter revenue fell 6.3% to €75.3 billion. Deliveries to customers dropped from 2.199 million to 1.885 million vehicles. In China, Spiegel reports, the group sold about 406,000 vehicles, down 38.5%. Before special items, the operating margin over nine months was 3.8%. Finance chief Arno Antlitz called that too low to keep investing strongly in the future.
Cash and outlook. The automotive division's net cash flow over nine months was €4.4 billion, and net liquidity on 30 September was €33.0 billion. The 2026 outlook is unchanged: revenue of around €315 billion and an operating margin of up to 1%. The group already cut that outlook in September.
Market reaction. Reuters says shares were indicated about 1.1% lower before the open. We did not find the result of the trading day.
What comes next. The group talks about a cost programme of around €31 billion. Dow Jones reports that the supervisory board approved a plan last month to double job losses to 100,000. Spiegel says talks with employees on further cuts are still going. Antlitz: "We cannot afford to lose any time and must act quickly and decisively."
