What happened
US stocks fell sharply for a second day on 30 October. The Nasdaq Composite closed down 2.8%, its worst day since 5 June. The S&P 500 lost 1.8%. The Dow Jones lost 1.09%, or 572.25 points, to 51,770.31. Intel fell 28% and Alphabet another 1.4%.
Why it matters to you
Big Tech is spending more on AI, and profits do not always meet expectations. If you hold a US index fund, it holds many of these companies. October was the Nasdaq's worst month since March 2025.
What to check and watch
Watch whether tech stocks keep sliding in early November. A Fed rate hike is expected in December, and US midterm elections come next week. This is an overview, not a forecast or financial advice.
What happened. On Friday 30 October, US stocks fell at the close. The Nasdaq Composite lost 2.8%, the S&P 500 about 1.8% and the Dow Jones 1.09%: it dropped 572.25 points to 51,770.31. During the session the Nasdaq was down as much as 3.3%, but it ended the day down 2.8%. For the Nasdaq it was the worst day since 5 June.
What pulled the market down. It was the second day of selling. On Thursday Alphabet, Google's owner, fell 12% and lost more than $500bn in market value: the company said its AI answers in search were hurting search ad revenue. On Friday Alphabet slid another 1.4%. Intel lost 28%, or more than $130bn in value, after a weak fourth-quarter forecast and a warning about slow PC demand. Amazon closed down 1.4%, Reddit down 29% and Roblox down 18%.
Why AI spending worries investors. According to the BBC, Meta, Alphabet, Oracle, Amazon and Microsoft together plan to spend about $800bn in 2026. Alphabet expects to spend up to $205bn and Amazon has committed $220bn. By Yahoo Finance's calculation, Amazon's free cash flow over the 12 months to September was a record outflow of more than $42bn. Kathleen Brookes of XTB says investors now want payback.
The month in numbers. According to Yahoo Finance, in October the Dow rose 1.5%, the S&P 500 fell 1.2% and the Nasdaq fell more than 5%. That is the Nasdaq's worst month since March 2025. Only technology and communication services fell in October, so it looks more like a sharp rotation than a sell-off of the whole market. Oil kept rising: Brent climbed to about $112 a barrel. Two Fed officials said on Friday that rates need to go higher, which strengthened expectations of a December hike.
Keep it in perspective. Even after the drop, the Nasdaq is up 7.8% over the past year. Keith Lerner of Truist sees the fall as possibly a reset, but allows for roughly 2-8% more downside in tech. That is his opinion, not a fact. Brookes of XTB notes that November is typically a strong month for stocks, but says that if AI stocks keep struggling, the AI trade may be past its peak.
What we don't know. Whether the sell-off continues next week. What the Fed will decide in December. How markets will react to the US elections and news from the Middle East.
