Prop challenge
A prop challenge is a paid evaluation from a prop firm: hit a profit target without breaking the loss limits. Pass it and you get a funded account.
How it works
Typical rules are a profit target of 8–10% in phase one and around 5% in phase two, a daily loss limit around 5% and an overall loss limit around 10%. Some firms add a minimum number of trading days, bans on trading during news or holding over weekends. The exact numbers depend on the firm.
The hard part is not making 10% but making it without ever breaking a loss limit. One oversized losing trade can close the account in a minute, even if you were close to the target.
Limits can be static (measured from the starting balance) or trailing (moving up with the account's high). A trailing limit is stricter: after a profit your room before a breach does not grow. Read carefully what each rule is measured from.
Account $10,000, target 8%, overall limit 10%, daily limit 5%. Risking 0.5% per trade ($50), you would need about 20 losers in a row to hit the overall limit, while 8 trades at +2R would reach the target. Risking 3% per trade, four bad trades would be enough to fail.
The most common mistake is trying to pass quickly by raising risk to reach the target. That is how most people fail. Set your risk per trade so that a streak of 8–10 losses does not break the limits, and do not raise it after a couple of losers. You often have more time than you think, and a new attempt costs real money.
Questions and answers
What is a prop challenge in simple terms?
It is a paid exam for traders: make a set percentage without losing more than the limit. Pass it and you get to trade the firm's capital.
What percentage of traders pass a prop challenge?
There is no reliable industry-wide figure, but firms and traders agree that most do not pass. Prepare first instead of buying attempts back to back.
What is trailing drawdown in a prop challenge?
It is a loss limit that moves up with your account's highest point. If you make money and then give some back, you can breach it sooner than a static limit.
