Trading bot

A trading bot is a program that opens and closes trades by itself under set rules, through an exchange API or a built-in service. It executes a strategy but does not make it profitable.

How it works

A bot follows rules such as buy $50 every Monday, place a grid of orders across a range, or enter when one EMA crosses another. It never gets tired or panics and trades around the clock, but it follows rules blindly even when the market has changed.

Some bots are built into exchanges (grid, DCA, rebalancing); others are external and connect to your account with an API key. In that case key security is critical: give trade permission only, never withdrawals, and restrict access by IP.

Before going live, a strategy is tested on history (a backtest) and with a small amount. Profit comes from the strategy, fees and the market, not from automation itself. Promises like a bot earning 5% a day are almost always a scam.

Example with numbers

A DCA bot buys $25 of BTC every week. Over a year that is 52 buys totalling $1,300, and the average entry price smooths out. If BTC falls all year, the bot keeps buying anyway: it does not know it is a bear market, it just follows the rule.

Common mistake

The biggest mistake is buying or downloading a profitable bot and handing it an API key with withdrawal rights. That is how funds get stolen. Use only services you have checked, issue keys without withdrawal permission, start small and monitor results instead of leaving the bot alone.

Questions and answers

What is a trading bot in simple terms?

It is a program that trades for you using rules set in advance. It clicks faster and without emotion, but it cannot think for you.

Can you make money with a trading bot?

Yes, if the strategy itself is profitable after fees. A bot running a losing strategy loses money quickly and with perfect discipline.

Is it safe to connect a bot through an API?

Reasonably, if the key has no withdrawal right, is locked to an IP and the service is reputable. Never give a third-party bot a key that can withdraw.
