What happened
Macau's gaming regulator says casinos took in 21.68 billion patacas in October, about $2.68bn. A year ago it was 24.09 billion, so revenue fell 10%. That is the fifth monthly drop in a row. For the first ten months of 2026 revenue is just 1.6% above last year, down from 14.3% growth after March.
Why it matters to you
Macau is a quick gauge of how much wealthy Chinese spend. Visitors during the holiday week were up 15.5%, yet bets were down. People are travelling but spending carefully. That hits shares of Sands China, Galaxy, Wynn Macau, MGM China and Melco.
What to check and watch
November figures are due in early December. Full October visitor data is due later in November. If the slide continues, 2026 as a whole could end below 2025. This is an overview, not advice.
Where it’s happening
LIVEDrag to spin. Green dots: the exchange is trading right now (regular hours, holidays not counted). Shadow: where it is night now. Borders: Natural Earth, quakes: USGS. Layer idea: God’s Eye View (MIT).
The numbers. Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) publishes casino revenue every month. October 2026: 21,680 million patacas against 24,086 million a year earlier, down 10.0%. Investing.com puts that at about $2.68bn and says the drop matched the analysts' median forecast.
Five months down. June minus 12.1%, July minus 8.4%, August and September minus 1.2% each, October minus 10%. The year started strong: January was up 24%. So January to October is still positive, but only just: 208.8 billion patacas against 205.4 billion, up 1.6%.
Why tourists did not help. During China's Golden Week holiday in early October about 1.14 million people visited Macau, 15.5% more than a year ago. But, Investing.com reports citing Jefferies analysts, gaming spend did not rise with the crowds. The high-end segment is the weakest.
What is behind it. Investing.com links the slide to China's slower economy, tighter scrutiny of wealthy residents' spending abroad and a cooling Chinese stock market. In the second half of 2025 an AI-driven stock rally lifted spending by rich visitors, so the comparison with last year is especially tough now.
Who it touches. Macau's casino operators trade in Hong Kong, including Sands China, Galaxy Entertainment, Wynn Macau and MGM China, along with Melco International. Their revenue depends heavily on visitors from mainland China.
