What happened
By October 29, 2026 Vietnam's goods trade had passed $1 trillion for the first time, customs said. Exports were about $493 billion (up 27.2%), imports nearly $508 billion (up 37.6%), and the deficit $14.02 billion. The Ministry of Industry and Trade estimates the ten months at $1.0106 trillion, up 32.3%. The numbers differ a little: the counting periods do not match.
Why it matters to you
Computers, electronics, phones and machinery make 54% of this trade. The largest partners, per VnExpress, are China and the US. So news about tariffs and electronics supply often touches Vietnam too.
What to check and watch
Final ten-month data: the agencies still differ. The balance: the ministry estimates a ten-month deficit of $12.7 billion, with October in surplus by $6.8 billion. Export growth: customs expects more than 25% this year against a target of 15-16%. This is an overview, not advice.

What happened. On October 29, Vietnam's customs department said goods trade for the year had passed $1 trillion for the first time. For scale, the whole of 2025 ended near $930 billion, so the country cleared last year's mark with two months to spare. In 2007, when Vietnam joined the WTO, trade was $100 billion.
Two numbers, and both are right. By customs data to October 29, exports were about $493 billion (up 27.2%) and imports nearly $508 billion (up 37.6%), together about $1.0013 trillion. That sum is ours, from the two published figures. The Ministry of Industry and Trade gives an estimate for ten months: $1.0106 trillion, up 32.3%. October alone, the ministry estimates, was about $122.2 billion, up 47.6%.
What the trade is made of. Foreign-invested (FDI) companies account for about $778 billion, or 77.5% of the total, up 37%. Domestic companies account for about $223 billion, up 16%. Computers, electronics and components, phones and components, and machinery and equipment together make about $532 billion, or 54% of trade. Processing industry makes 87.4% of exports.
Partners. According to VnExpress, Vietnam's two largest partners are China and the US. The ministry notes export growth to China, the US, the EU, South Korea and ASEAN. In all, Vietnam trades with 237 countries and territories, and 36 export markets and 31 import markets are each worth more than $1 billion.
The balance. Imports are growing faster than exports, so by customs data the trade balance is negative: minus $14.02 billion. The ministry puts the ten-month deficit at $12.7 billion, and says October brought a $6.8 billion surplus, the second month in a row.
What it means for the world. This is our reading, not a conclusion from the sources: most of the turnover is electronics and equipment, so the growth is tied to production chains, where Vietnam takes in parts and ships out finished goods. That is why changes in tariffs and demand for electronics show up in Vietnamese numbers. None of the pages links the growth to specific tariffs, and we do not claim it.
What is still unclear. Final data from the agencies for October will come later and may differ from the estimates.
