What happened
On 27 October Mercedes-Benz Group cut its 2026 outlook. Adjusted return on sales for its car division is now 2% to 3% instead of 3% to 5%. Group EBIT (operating profit) is expected at last year's level, not "significantly above". Reasons: a harder market in China and higher fourth-quarter costs. Per Reuters, shares were down 5.3%.
Why it matters to you
China was one of the main profit sources for German carmakers. When demand there is weak, it hits revenue and the share prices of companies exposed to it. That matters if you hold Mercedes stock or a fund that tracks the Dax index.

The full third-quarter report on 28 October. Look at China deliveries, costs, and whether the company repeats the new outlook. This is not advice to buy or sell.
What happened. On 27 October Mercedes-Benz Group updated its 2026 outlook. It gave two reasons: an increasingly challenging market in China, and higher costs in the fourth quarter, including higher material costs.
The new outlook. Mercedes-Benz Cars, the car division, now expects an adjusted return on sales of 2% to 3% instead of 3% to 5%. Return on sales shows how much profit is left from each euro of revenue. Group EBIT (operating profit) is now expected at the prior-year level, where the company had said "significantly above". Free cash flow of the industrial business is now expected significantly below last year. The earlier guidance was "slightly below".
What did not change. The outlook for Mercedes-Benz Vans (return on sales of 8% to 10%) and for the financial arm (return on equity of 12% to 14%) stays the same.
Preliminary third quarter. Cars adjusted return on sales was 2.5% against a consensus of 2.4%. Group EBIT was €1.77 billion against €1.6 billion expected. Free cash flow of the industrial business was €172 million against €422 million expected. The full results come on 28 October.
Market reaction. Per Reuters, shares were down 5.3% at 0911 GMT, on track for their biggest intraday drop since May 2025. Per Handelsblatt, they were the weakest stock in the Dax on Tuesday morning.
China. Per Handelsblatt, Mercedes deliveries to China fell 29% in the first nine months. The market there shrank by more than a fifth this year, partly because of high fuel prices linked to the Iran war. Per Reuters, Mercedes car sales fell 8% year on year in the third quarter, and Chinese rivals are gaining ground in Europe.
