What happened

According to the Associated Press, Democrats retook control of the US Senate in the November 3 midterm elections. When AP reported it, the House was still too early to call. Markets reacted at once: S&P 500 futures fell 1.2% and Nasdaq futures more than 2%. The dollar index slipped 0.37% to 101.34 (Reuters).

Why it matters to you

If you hold US stocks, dollars or a floating rate loan, this affects you. Control of Congress shapes the budget, taxes and rules for AI, banks and crypto. Analysts quoted by Reuters link the tech sell-off to fears of tougher AI oversight.

What happened. The Associated Press reported that Democrats have retaken control of the US Senate. Going in, they needed a net gain of four seats. In North Carolina, former governor Roy Cooper won a seat Republicans held. In South Carolina, Annie Andrews beat Darline Graham. For the House, AP said at the time it was too early to call, though Democrats had already flipped seven seats.

How markets reacted. Per Reuters, S&P 500 futures fell 1.2% and Nasdaq futures more than 2%. The 10-year US Treasury yield dropped 6 basis points to 4.906%. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point. When yields fall, bond prices rise: investors were looking for safety. Japan's Nikkei lost 3% and South Korea's KOSPI 1.6%.

The dollar. The dollar index, which compares it with a basket of six currencies, fell 0.37% to 101.34. The euro rose 0.5% to $1.1249. The yen strengthened 0.7% to 157.63 per dollar. Against the Swiss franc the dollar lost 0.9%, to 0.8133 (Reuters).

Why. These are analysts' views, not facts. Saxo strategist Charu Chanana thinks markets are pricing in less fiscal stimulus. OCBC strategist Moh Siong Sim sees fears of tougher AI regulation, hence the weak Nasdaq. He also notes that even with Democrats in control, passing laws is hard because the president has a veto. AP writes that Trump has promised to use his veto to block the Democrats' agenda.

Who this affects. People who hold US tech stocks, dollars or bonds. A drop in futures does not mean the trading day will close that way. The first hours after an election are often jumpy.

What we do not know. Who ends up with the House and by how much. Whether the drop in the dollar and futures holds after the US market opens. This is an overview, not a forecast or advice.
