Hardware wallet
A hardware wallet is a separate device that keeps your private keys offline and signs transactions inside itself. The keys never touch your computer, even if it is infected.
How it works
A device the size of a USB stick or card creates the keys and stores them in a secure chip. Your computer or phone only prepares the transaction and passes it to the device. You check the address and amount on the wallet's own screen and confirm with a button, and only the finished signature comes out.
It is the main way to keep larger amounts in cold storage. Malware on your computer cannot extract the key, and nothing gets signed without a physical button press. During setup the device shows a seed phrase, though, and keeping that safe is entirely on you.
A hardware wallet does not protect against everything. If you approve a harmful transaction or grant a drainer permission yourself, the device will sign it faithfully. Read what the device screen says, not what the website says.
You have $3,000 of ETH on an exchange. You buy a hardware wallet for roughly $60 to $150 from the manufacturer, write the 24 words on paper, send $20 as a test, then move the rest. Even if your laptop is hacked, nobody can move the ETH without the device or the seed phrase.
A dangerous mistake is buying a used device or one from a marketplace reseller, and using a seed phrase that came printed in the box. Such a device may be tampered with. Buy only from the maker or an official seller, generate the seed phrase yourself on the device, and never type it into a computer or phone.
Questions and answers
What is a hardware wallet in simple terms?
It is a small safe for your crypto keys. It signs transfers inside itself, so the keys never go online.
What happens if I lose my hardware wallet?
Your coins are not lost, they live on the blockchain. Get a new device or another wallet and restore access with your seed phrase.
Do I need a hardware wallet for small amounts?
Not necessarily. It is usually recommended once losing the amount would really hurt; for small sums a carefully used software wallet is often enough.
