Honeypot token

A honeypot token is a scam token you can buy but cannot sell. Its smart contract code blocks selling for everyone except the creator, so buyers' money stays with the scammer.

How it works

The scammer launches a token, sets up a DEX pool and hypes it on social media. The chart goes up because everyone is only buying. When you try to sell, the transaction fails or a hidden fee eats nearly all of it.

The trap is hidden in the code: an address blacklist, selling allowed only for a whitelist, a 99% sell tax, or a switch the owner can flip at any time. Once enough buyers are in, the creator pulls the liquidity from the pool.

Honeypots show up mostly among memecoins and new DEX tokens. Contract-scanner tools and a block explorer help you check: are there successful sells from ordinary addresses, is the code verified, can the owner change fees. But scanners do not catch every new trick.

Example with numbers

You buy $200 of a new memecoin that rose 400% in an hour. A day later the chart says your bag is worth $600. You hit sell and the transaction reverts. The explorer shows no sells from ordinary addresses at all, only buys. Your $200 is effectively locked.

Common mistake

The main mistake is buying a token just because the chart is flying. A chart with only green candles and no sells is a warning sign in itself. Before buying, run the token through a contract scanner, look for sells from regular wallets in the explorer, and start with a tiny amount you test-sell first.

Questions and answers

What is a honeypot in crypto in simple terms?

It is a trap token: you can buy it but not sell it. Buyers' money ends up with the creator.

How can I check if a token is a honeypot?

Run the contract through a honeypot checker, see in the explorer whether ordinary addresses are selling, and buy a tiny amount and try selling it. No method gives a 100% guarantee.

Can I get my money back from a honeypot?

Almost never. The contract does exactly what it was written to do, and the creator is usually anonymous and pulls the liquidity fast.
