Hot and cold wallet
A hot wallet keeps its keys on an internet-connected device: convenient but more exposed. A cold wallet keeps keys offline (for example, a hardware wallet) and is safer for larger amounts.
How it works
Hot wallets are phone apps, browser extensions and desktop programs. The keys live on a device that goes online, which makes them handy for daily use: paying, trading, using DeFi. But malware, a phishing site or a hacked phone can reach the keys.
A cold wallet keeps private keys on a device that never goes online. Most often that is a hardware wallet: the transaction is signed inside it, and the key never touches your computer. It is slower to use, but stealing the keys remotely is much harder.
A practical setup: keep a small spending amount in a hot wallet and your main savings in a cold one. Either way, everything depends on the seed phrase: write it on paper or metal and store it offline. Whoever knows the seed phrase owns the money.
You have $5,000 in crypto. You keep $300 in a hot wallet on your phone for everyday transfers and $4,700 on a hardware wallet. If your phone gets hacked, $300 is at risk, not the whole $5,000.
The biggest mistake is keeping your seed phrase in a photo, notes app or cloud. Then even a cold wallet becomes hot, because the phrase can be stolen remotely. Another is typing the seed phrase into a website to "verify" or "sync" it. Never enter it anywhere except the wallet itself when restoring.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between a hot and a cold wallet?
A hot wallet keeps keys on an online device and is convenient for frequent use. A cold wallet keeps keys offline and is better protected from remote hacks.
Is an exchange account a hot wallet?
It is custodial storage: the exchange holds the keys, not you. Exchanges keep part of their funds in hot wallets, and if something happens to the exchange, you depend on it.
Do I need a cold wallet?
If you hold an amount that would hurt to lose, it is a sensible choice. For small spending money, a hot wallet with a safely stored seed phrase is enough.
