What happened

On November 6 the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said nonfarm payrolls rose by 165,000 in October. Economists polled by Reuters expected 65,000. Unemployment was 4.1% against an expected 4.2%. August and September were revised up by a combined 84,000.

Why it matters to you

This is the key monthly report for the Fed and markets. Strong hiring and wages up 3.1% from a year ago, instead of the expected 2.9%, make the labour market look hotter than thought. That can firm up bets on a Fed rate hike and weigh on bonds, growth stocks and crypto.
