What happened

On November 6 the US Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued an order against crypto exchange MEXC Global. US financial institutions will be barred from sending money to MEXC or receiving money from it. The agency says that from May 2021 to May 2026 at least $16 billion linked to Iranian, North Korean and Russian sanctions evasion and cybercrime moved through the exchange. The order takes effect 30 days after it is published in the Federal Register.

Why it matters to you

MEXC is one of the 20 largest crypto exchanges in the world, with many customers outside the US. It does not officially serve Americans, but the ban covers any transfer through a US financial institution, which reaches partners that move dollar payments too.

What to check and watch

Watch for the Federal Register publication date and for MEXC's response. If you keep funds on the exchange, check how you deposit and withdraw. This is an overview, not advice.

What was decided. FinCEN issued the order under section 9714(a) of the Combating Russian Money Laundering Act. It is not an OFAC sanctions listing but a separate measure: US financial institutions may not process any transmittal of funds from or to MEXC Global. Violations can bring civil or criminal penalties. The step is part of Treasury's Operation Economic Outcast, a campaign against Iranian sanctions evasion.

What the exchange is accused of. Treasury says that between May 2021 and May 2026 MEXC handled at least $16 billion tied to sanctions evasion, cybercrime and other illicit activity. Nearly $1.5 billion of that is linked to Russian sanctions evasion, including $232 million in direct transactions with US, EU and UK sanctioned entities. The agency says the exchange was still dealing with sanctioned Garantex and its successor Grinex as recently as June 2026, and processed almost $200 million tied to the A7A5 stablecoin. About $1 billion moved with Iranian crypto exchangers, Treasury says, and about $22 million benefited Iran's central bank and the IRGC.

The exchange itself. According to Treasury, MEXC was founded in 2018 and as of September 2026 processed more than $1 billion a day and held about $5 billion in reserves. Its rules bar users from Iran and North Korea, but the agency calls its anti-money laundering controls severely deficient. Cointelegraph asked MEXC for comment and had no reply by publication.

What comes next. The order takes effect 30 days after it appears in the Federal Register, and no publication date has been announced. It does not change banks' suspicious activity reporting duties or OFAC sanctions.
